Standard Precautions for Infection Control

Safety Point Precaution
1. Hands Always wash hands with soap and water after handling potentially contaminated materials whether gloves were worn or not.
2. Gloves Always wear gloves when touching potentially contaminated materials
3. Face and eye protection Wear mask and eye protection when procedures and patient care activities are likely to generate splashes or sprays. This prevents infection via the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and mouth.
4. Gown Wear a gown to prevent soiling of clothing when procedures and patient care activities are likely to generate splashes or sprays
5. Soiled equipment Handle patient care materials and equipments soiled with potentially infectious material in a manner that will prevent secondary transmission.
6. Surface contamination Surfaces should be regularly cleaned and disinfected.
7. Soiled linen Handlebed linens soiled with potentially infectious material in a manner that will prevent secondary transmission.
8.Occupational health and bloodborne pathogens Occupational health and bloodborne pathogen guidelines are to be followed to reduce risk from contaminated equipment and patient care procedures with an inherent risk of spreading the disease.
9. Isolation Isolate patients who are at risk for contaminating others in either a private room or in a room with others with the same condition.
