General structures of microcystins |
| R-group | Substituents |
|---|---|
| R1 | H or CH3 |
| R2 | Any amino acid |
| R3 | H or CH3 |
| R4 | Any amino acid |
Microcystins are named as microcystin XZ where X = R2 and Z = R4. That is, the one letter representation of a naturally occuring amino acid. Microcystin LR therefore has leucine (L) at R2 and arginine (R) at R4. Microcystins are also called cyanoginosins and the same rules of nomenclature apply and cyanoginosin LR is the same as microcystin LR.
