| Risk
to humans and mammals: |
Generally
considered safe with LD50s for acute toxicity generally greater than
10000 mg/kg, but high doses may be experienced during spraying. Irritating
or toxic by inhalation, skin contact, ingestion, or eye contact. Symptoms
of poisoning are typical of motor neuron poisoning. Decomposes if
burnt to yield toxic gases. In many cases, intoxication may be complicated
by the solvents used in the formulation. Some reports suggest long
term health problems including mutagenesis, carcinogenesis and reproductive
disorders. |

| Other comments: |
Deltamethrin is a
synthetic pyrethrin. Like natural pyrethrins it is relatively safe
and break downs in the environment relatively quickly. Pyrethrins
act on the insect nervous system by blocking sodium channels. Deltamethrin
is an effective knockdown pesticide and can be used in agriculture
and in public health, e.g. in fumigating houses. It would be useful
in the event that a biological agent became established in a vector
such as mosquitos. |
