Adverse reactions and side effects

NOTE: all such reactions are rare.

Prolonged use can lead to thyroid, liver, or renal dysfunctions. Some skin irritation can also be seen with repeated use. Should not be used in large burns (>20% of skin surface.) Should not be used in pregnancy, nursing, or children under six months.
Mode of action Povidone iodide is a convenient method for delivery of iodine as a disinfectant. The povidone component, a polymer, forms a complex with the iodine that slowly releases the iodine to give a prolonged disinfectant effect.
