and usage |
As a
topical disinfectant. It is more effective than other iodine preparations
at comparable concentrations. It has the advantage of not stinging
when used on cuts and grazes. It is easier to use than some other
disinfectants, even though it is marginally less effective. |

Considered
generally safe in normal use in disinfecting wounds. |
| Drug
interactions |
Appears
to interfere with other disinfectants, specifically silver sulfadiazine
or chlorhexidine, when used together. |
| Adverse
reactions and side effects
NOTE:
all such reactions are rare. |
Prolonged
use can lead to thyroid, liver, or renal dysfunctions. Some skin irritation
can also be seen with repeated use. Should not be used in large burns
(>20% of skin surface.) Should not be used in pregnancy, nursing,
or children under six months. |

iodide is a convenient method for delivery of iodine as a disinfectant.
The povidone component, a polymer, forms a complex with the iodine
that slowly releases the iodine to give a prolonged disinfectant effect. |
